Description

Azadi (Liberty) is part of the Silent City series. The Azadi Tower was designed and built before the Iranian Islamic Revolution. It is located in Azadi Square in the center of Tehran and was constructed as a symbol of modern Iran to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. This monument is a fundamental piece of Iranian cultural identity and has witnessed public protests against the socio-political decisions of the Islamic government in recent decades. For this reason, it has become a symbol of the struggle for freedom and of all those who have lost their lives claiming for their identity. In my work, the Azadi Tower is depicted as partially painted, in front of a closed border. In the background, there is a labyrinth of tracks, representing the paths and choices of the people. The Tower represents identity – an identity that is no longer free. The public is tasked with imagining future scenarios and realizing their paths.
