ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Artist: Ilaria Arpino
Location: Maradiva Villa Resort&spa Art Gallery, Wolmar Coastal Road, Flic en Flac, Mauritius
Opening: 9th November 2018, 8.00 p.m.
During the 12th edition of Arte Laguna Prize, the artist Ilaria Arpino (Cuneo, Italy | 1958) was selected as the winner of the art residency offered by Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa, in Flic and Flac, Mauritius.
Residency period: from October 18th to Novembre 12th, 2018.
After only 15 days, Ilaria shares her travel diary with us and tells us: “everything is great here in Mauritius! I have met other artists and I am working a lot. One sculpture is in the foundry and I found a beautiful volcanic stone to use as a pedestal. I did a lecture for the art department students of MGI university. I met the children of the A.R.I.S.E. Centre (www.associationarise.org) and we did a creative project together. We modeled a volcanic mountain of the island with a very thick paper, painted it and applied three-dimensional butterflies on it. The children were enthusiastic and they danced in traditional costumes. I'm currently working on a painting called "The heartbeat of Mauritius". Last night I photographed some works on the beach, the photos are very suggestive....It's an amazing experience, thank you!”
During the period of residency there are many activities organized by Maradiva and Basu Foundation for the Arts, organizers of the artistic residency and partners of the Arte Laguna Prize: the visit to the Foundry in Pamplemouses in the north of the island, the lecture at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Moka, the visit to the Maison Eureka, ancient residence of the Mauritian colonial era, the workshop with the children of the A.R.I.S.E. Association in Pointe aux Sables, association that takes care of abandoned children.
This beautiful experience ends with the exhibition at the Art Gallery of Maradiva, opening on November 9th where there will be exhibited:
- the sculptures of the Urban Angels series, enriched with painted volcanic stones
- the Liberty sculpture: a stylized winged woman, a symbolic work created on the occasion of the 50 years of independence of the island
- the big canvas We love the way we are of 300 x 90 cm
Surely Ilaria will take with her to Miami in the USA, where she currently lives, a beautiful memory of this experience.
