Venice, 31rd August 2012 – At Lido of Venice, among actors and screenings there is also room for sculptures and art installations. Yesterday the fifteenth edition of the Exhibition OPEN inaugurated and during the opening the Special Prize Arte Laguna was awarded. The synergy between Arte Laguna and PDG Arte Communications continues in the promotion and support to young emerging artists, and this year the protagonists have been the students of the University of Thessaloniki, supervised by curator Christos Sawidis, for the creation of a site-specific and interactive project on San Servolo Island.
Among their works the jury of Arte Laguna Prize selected the winner, young Giorgos Gerontides. The artist will be among the the finalists of the 7th Arte Laguna Prize and he will be able to show his work in March 2013, at the collective exhibition at Venice Arsenale.
Igor Zanti, the curator of Arte Laguna Prize, explained the jury's decision in these words: "The jury has decided to award the sculpture by the Greek sculptor Giorgos Gerontides, for his interesting use of different art techniques, for research on materials and for his creative sensitivity".
Among the artists participating in Open15 there are also the Chinese Lia Wei and Zhang Qiang, finalists of Arte Laguna Prize last year and selected by PDG Arte Communication for the current exhibition.
The works by over thirty artists will be on view through September 30 at Lido of Venice and on San Servolo Island, including the flags made by Yoko Ono and the stainless steel sculptures by Lim Dong-Lak.
