Marco Hemmerling | The experience at BigCi, Australia

Marco Hemmerling, winner of BigCi Special Prize for Arte Laguna Prize 19th edition, had a month-long artistic residency (from 18 February to 18 March, 2025) where discover new paths and the surrounding nature.

His artistic experience was joined by many guided tours of the magnificent Blue Mountains, part of a Unesco heritage, which led to discover new sensations and ideas for his artistic career.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marco Hemmerling is founding partner of SPADE, an interdisciplinary art and design studio working across different scales and typologies – from architecture to product design and art installations. His work is part of the collection at the Design Museum in Munich, the Museum of Applied Arts in Cologne, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, the German Museum of Technology in Berlin as well as the German Dance Museum in Cologne. It was exhibited at international art festivals, such as the Hybrid Art Exhibition in Moscow, the Fuorisalone in Milan, the Arbres et Lumières Festival in Geneva and the Islamic Arts Festival in Sharjah.

THE RESIDENCY

The artist residency at BigCi was a unique experience for me, both artistically and in terms of the opportunity to explore the nature of the Blue Mountains and Wollemi National Park intensively. The excursions with Yuri and the professional exchange with Rae and the other artists were very inspiring and will stay with me for a long time.

My project “Naturalibus Viribus” aims to capture the dynamics of natural forces in a series of sculptures, reflecting the apparently invisible processes of transformation as part of our environmental experience. A particular focus of the project is put on the interpretation of generative processes and their spatial representation from intangible to tangible and digital to physical. The creation of the artwork involves the tracing of generative forces in nature, transforming them into a motion-driven spatial configuration, which is carried out by computational design and materialized by 3D-printing.
