Carlos Carvalho Arte Contemporânea promotes multiple supports and languages, prioritizing pertinent artists and ideas to encourage wider reflections and questions about contemporary art and all its related issues. Founded in 1988, the former Ara gallery expanded its activities in order to forge new strategies towards more emerging and strong proposals, presenting in 2005 this new project and a new space.
The gallery maintains a programme of about seven exhibitions per year, at least one group exhibition, often curated. Taking participation in art fairs as a main goal, the gallery tries to map a solid international network of the contemporary art scene to defend its artists abroad.
The diversity of the spaces allows it to present a programme that is diverse and consistent, that may hold different supports and spatial solutions.
The gallery also publishes designed monographs containing texts by international curators and critics and which is co-edited by Dardo.
