WINNERS OF ARTE LAGUNA PRIZE | 21st EDITION 2026

Each year, the Arte Laguna Prize creates new collaborations with international partners, enriching the competition’s network and offering opportunities to participating artists.
Below are all the winners of the Special Prizes of the 21st 2026 edition.

The Overall Winner of the 21st edition will be chosen by the jury, and announced, on November 6th, 2026.

VINCITRICE ASSOLUTA

Sezione: SCULTURA E INSTALLAZIONE

Titolo: Rockit Black

Reason

ESTUDIO RAMBAR
Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Kellen Meyer | Arte Laguna PrizeKellen Meyer
Laguna Beach, USA (1973)

Reason

We selected Kellen Meyer for her thoughtful and distinctive approach to the relationship between art, nature, and ecology. Her practice, rooted in fiber, sculpture, and installation, explores ideas of interconnectedness, coexistence, and our relationship with the natural world through tactile and deeply material processes.
We were particularly drawn to the way Kellen works with organic and found materials, allowing their textures, origins, and inherent qualities to become an essential part of the work. We believe that Costa Rica offers a particularly meaningful environment for her practice. Its extraordinary biodiversity, rich ecosystems, and deep connection between nature and everyday life provide an inspiring context for an artist whose work is so closely connected to the natural world.

Kent Watanabe | Arte Laguna PrizeKent Watanabe

Yi Chiang | Arte Laguna PrizeYi Chiang
Taichung, Taiwan (1993)

Reason

A sound and moving-image artist holding an MMus from Goldsmiths and an MSc in Forestry and Environmental Resources from National Taiwan University, Yi treats ecological data as compositional material. In “In Between Whale Song and Noise Pollution” (2025), rising CO₂ deepens distortion while declining whale populations hollow the reverb; in “Between Strata Pulses and Resonance” (2026), Icelandic field recordings drive transducers that visibly shift volcanic sand across four platforms arranged according to the sites’ actual geography. The jury responded with admiration both for the rigor of this methodology and for Yi’s stated aim for Culver City: a site-responsive, multi-channel installation built from localized ecological data and urban-environmental memory, developed through genuine exchange with the community rather than in isolation.

Shirin Hashemi | Arte Laguna PrizeShirin Hashemi
Toronto, Canada (1980)

Reason

Based in Toronto, Shirin operates at the intersection of artistry, architectural design, and model-making. Her Living Archive series comprises three-dimensional architectural self-portraits: hand-drafted compositions rendered in watercolor and acrylic, then meticulously cut into shards and mounted upon custom-built wooden frames of varying depth that cast their own shadows. Drawing upon the multi-focal logic characteristic of Persian miniature painting, the series charts the human figure dissolving beyond the frame’s boundaries, leaving behind “symbolic residues”: an abandoned suitcase, a rug, a swing frozen mid-motion, that hold memory within architecture itself. The jury viewed her proposal to translate Culver City’s own architectural forms and urban thresholds into new site-specific relief assemblies as precisely the kind of place-responsive project for which this residency was conceived.

Juraj Makarun | Arte Laguna PrizeJuraj Makarun
Rijeka, Croatia (1997)

Reason

A sculptor hailing from Rijeka, Juraj works in bronze, stone, and clay, crafting a practice that interrogates the profound tensions between strength and collapse, order and instinct, faith and physical force. The jury was captivated by his material intelligence: a dog constructed from copper sheeting that once clad a cathedral angel for three centuries; a falling horse first cast at 34 centimeters before being reborn in clay and polyester at an imposing 270 centimeters; and a Don Quixote whose bronze form has been selected for the Society of Portrait Sculptors’ FACE 2026 exhibition in London. Beyond sculpture, Juraj directs and shoots his own short films, a dual practice that the panel recognized as a natural affinity with a city built upon scenic craft and fabrication.

Tania Welz Winner for Arte Laguna Prize and Fomas Special Prize 2026
Tania Welz | Arte Laguna PrizeTania Welz
Munich, Germany

Reason

Tania Welz’s work stands out as the winner for its ability to translate the competition theme into a striking visual form, in which art, material, and industrial process find a particularly effective synthesis. Through a large panel made entirely by hand from knitted copper wire, the artist makes the journey of the material from heat to form perceptible, transforming a gesture traditionally associated with textiles into a reflection on the world of metallurgy.

1st PRIZE – OIL PAINTING

Daniela Astone | Arte Laguna PrizeDaniela Astone
Pisa, Italy (1980)

Reason

Daniela Astone — Melting in the Grass
The First Prize is awarded to a work grounded in a pure and confident use of oil painting. Quiet and understated in character, the painting demonstrates a refined and restrained approach to form. Through careful simplification and synthesis, the artist creates a composition that remains rich, vivid and layered. As a single easel painting, the work succeeds in conveying a complete and compelling artistic vision, revealing a mature understanding of the expressive possibilities inherent in oil painting.

2nd PRIZE – OIL PAINTING

Samanta Rched Abugauch | Arte Laguna PrizeSamanta Rched Abugauch
Cordoba, Argentina (1987)

Reason

Samanta Rched Abugauch — Felices por siempre
The Second Prize artist takes oil painting as the foundation of the work while integrating it with a three-dimensional spatial presentation, creating a dialogue between painting and installation. The work employs a rich and diverse range of expressive approaches, while maintaining a strong emphasis on the language of painting itself. Its thoughtful conception and carefully constructed atmosphere bring the pictorial and spatial elements into a harmonious relationship, allowing the work to communicate its subject with clarity and artistic coherence.

SPECIAL AWARD – PAINTING (All Media)

Hong Li | Arte Laguna PrizeHong Li
ZheJiang, China (1967)

Reason

Hong Li — Echoes in Monochrome
Hong Li’s abstract work employs mixed media and is predominantly articulated through a white tonal palette, creating a visual language that is at once refined, pure and richly layered. Colour, composition and the inherent qualities of the materials contribute equally to the aesthetic experience of the work. Here, material is not simply a medium but an integral part of the artistic language. The work possesses a strong visual and emotional presence, establishing a compelling relationship between abstraction, materiality and feeling that invites an emotional response from the viewer.
